Praa Sands - Lower Trevurvas - Rinsey Cove - Hendra Beach - Praa Sands

A walk of approximately three miles, taking in a mixture of rural and coastal countryside,      (or a little bit further if you continue on  to Porthleven).

  Saturday 6th September 2003

Setting out from Praa Sands in the late morning, the weather conditions had been changeable  - and at times dramatic.
Walking out from the village towards Germoe, pass Pengersick Castle and turn right into Pengersick Parc.

Approximately 100yards along this lane is a stile which leads onto a wooded footpath.

Proceed along the footpath until a lovely pond at Lower Trevurvas is reached. Continue on  between the houses of this beautiful hamlet and watch out for the buzzards that inhabit the area. There were several sitting on telegraph poles and "patrolling" on this occasion.
Follow the lane for another 400 yards until this fence comes into view          Just to the right is another stile. Climb over and follow the path on through the fields.
There are glorious views across Mounts Bay to Penzance, Mousehole and Tater Du Lighthouse in the far South West. Continue through the fields until Hendra Farm is reached. Turn right at the road junction and walk downhill towards the sea.

At this time of year there are plenty of blackberries in the hedgerows, clouds of butterflies and yet more buzzards circling overhead.

Watch out for this archway to the left of the lane, about half a mile further on. There is a large white, flat roofed building up the hillside to the right at this point. Walk through the arch and onto Lesceave Cliffs.

This footpath leads onto the Coastal footpath which is well signed and tended all the way on to the Car Park at Rinsey. (Level with the large house on the headland).

When the Engine House at Wheal Prosper comes into view, there is the option of taking the pathway to the right down to the beach or continuing to the engine house and taking the subsequent path to the beach.

The path down to Rinsey Cove, (one of the most beautiful coves to be found), is a bit of a scramble and care should be taken.

Look out for the superb wave cut platforms to be seen at either side of the cove.

This is a great place to cool down with a swim, but remember that this beach does not benefit from lifeguards.

There are super rock pools, caves and provided the tide is not fully in; a glorious sandy beach.

The return to Praa Sands is a straightforward following of the Coastal Footpath climbing up from the beach and re-tracing your steps until the point where the path forks into two about half a mile on from  the Car Park at Rinsey Head.  Take the lower path and continue along always aiming for the vast beach at Praa.
At the beginnings of Praa Sands, (Hendra Beach) there is the choice of walking on the sands or continuing along the coastal footpath through the gardens at Sea Meads.

Of course, if you are still full of energy, it is possible to continue East along the coastal footpath from Rinsey for another two and a half miles to Porthleven.

Please see below for some thumbnails of highlights from the walk on to Porthleven.

At Porthleven there is the ancient harbour, - cafes, shops, pubs, restaurants ...and the bus stop from which either the "2" or "2A" can be caught for the return to Praa Sands.
