HOW TO FIND THE CHAPEL
St. Mary's, a large wooden sided hut with
pitched roof and porch entrance is located at the top of a field off the main
Penzance to Helston Road (A394) opposite the Praa Sands Golf Course (Look out
for the large Crucifix and blue Church Notice board on the left opposite the
golf club). There is a tarmacadam drive up from the road and parking space
available. This little Church is dedicated to Mary.
In 1961, Fr. A.P. Byrne C.R.L. had
the opportunity to purchase a private Chapel on the main road at Praa Sands. (It
is thought that this Chapel was first used for Sunday Mass in 1925). The Chapel
had originally been opened and blessed by Bishop Barrett in 1935, and later
abandoned. During the period of disuse, Mass was celebrated at "Seaforth",
a house on the main road at Praa Sands. Thereafter, it was celebrated at
Tregembo Manor, Relubbus.
Dominating the road and entrance to St. Mary's is the large wayside Crucifix,
blessed by Bishop Barrett when he opened the Chapel. The figure is carved out of
teakwood.

ST MARY'S
CATHOLIC CHAPEL, GERMOE
(Masses
are now being held each Saturday at 4.00 pm at St. Germoe C of E Church for the
time being.)
The first week of Advent began with the celebration of Mass by Fr Frank on
Saturday,
29th November at the Church of St Germoe, served on the altar by Eric Reeves and
Tony Bawden.
Before Mass, Fr Frank blessed the candles on the traditional Advent Wreath,
symbolising the light and love that Jesus brought into the world, the three
purple candles symbolising the time of preparation and the rose candle
symbolising joy and rejoicing. The Advent Wreath is round having no beginning
and no end, made of evergreens, symbolising God's everlasting love and also that
those who love God will have everlasting life with him.
The reading this week was taken from the gospel according to Luke, when Jesus,
warned the apostles to 'stay awake' praying at all times for the strength to
survive the temptations of this world to be able to stand with confidence before
the Son of Man.
On Friday, 5th December, Mass will be offered at 10.30 am at St Julia's Hospice
Chapel, Hayle and on Saturday, 6th December everyone is most welcome to
participate in the 4 pm Mass at the Church of St Germoe. On Wednesday, 24th
December, there will be a very special Christmas Eve Mass at 4 pm, to celebrate
the birth of Jesus more than two thousand years ago.
ST MARY'S CATHOLIC CHAPEL, GERMOE
For the first time in many years there was no Service celebrated last Saturday
at St Mary's Chapel but the good news is that the 4 pm Mass will be offered on
Saturday, 13th September by Fr Tony at St. Germoe Church, Germoe with much
gratitude and thanks to the Vicar and parishioners at St. Germoe.
Our 4 pm Saturday Mass will continue to be celebrated at St. Germoe for the time
being and hopefully work will commence on the Chapel repairs as soon as
possible. We look forward to meeting everyone at our new venue on Saturday with
our sincere appreciation to our host minister and parishioners.
Masses at Germoe are suspended for 2 to 3 weeks.
Fr. Tony has had no option but to close St. Mary's, Germoe recently following
instructions from the Diocesan Surveyor. A survey on the state of the
asbestos in the Lady Chapel at St. Mary's is due to be carried out on Tuesday
9th Sept. following which decisions will be made on the procedure to follow.
Check here for regular updates as to the progress of affairs at St. Mary's.
