Copy of a letter written for publication in the Breage & Germoe Parish Magazine by Father Tony Delsink, on the occasion of ceasing Catholic Vigil Mass at St Germoe on Saturday evenings.

‘About 18 months ago, the Roman Catholic Community of St Mary’s Chapel, Germoe, had to vacate their premises due to structural defects.

It was felt very important at the time to find an alternative place of worship in the Germoe area.  Enquiries were made to our Anglican friends at St Germoe Parish Church, and without hesitation, Vicar Penny with the support of the Bishop of Truro, consented to us using the church for the celebration of Holy Mass.  So commenced our tenure at St Germoe, with Mass being celebrated at 4.00pm each Saturday, for the local Catholic Community of approximately 60 souls.

This act of hospitality by our Anglican friends has been deeply welcomed by us.  For many, losing the use of St Mary’s was a source of anguish and disappointment.  However these feelings of loss have been greatly healed by being able to use the beautiful church of St Germoe .

It was also an historic occasion.  The St Germoe Church, first built in the 1100’s, would have been built to serve the local Roman Catholic community (the only Christian church in these islands at the time).  Since the Reformation, the form of worship has differed, in line with Anglican liturgical reform.  It is likely therefore that this was the first time since the Reformation that Holy Catholic Mass has been celebrated in the building.

We were profoundly aware of the significance of this fact as we gathered together in this place for the first time, and it added great poignancy to the act of generosity extended to us by Vicar Penny.

Over the past months we have become very much at home at St Germoe.  So much so that we have hosted a visit by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Plymouth, Rt  Rev Christopher Budd – who also expressed his sincere thanks for the gift of hospitality from the Anglican Communion.

Following a wide ranging review of resources in the Cornwall Catholic Deanery, it has now been decided to cease the celebration of a Roman Catholic Mass at Germoe.  Our final celebration will be on Palm Sunday – as we prepare for Holy Week.  Our Catholic community will be able to attend Mass at St Ives, Hayle, Penzance , Camborne, Redruth or Helston.

I am writing to express, on behalf of the Roman Catholic Community in West Cornwall , our heartfelt thanks to Bishop Bill Ind, Vicar Penny and all the members of the Anglican Church in Germoe for making us so welcome in your church over the past 18 months.  We shall pray for you and ask you to pray for us.  We leave you recalling the words of Our Lord Jesus Christ – “May they all be one. Father, may they be one in us, as you are in me and I am in you, so that the world may believe it was you who sent me” (John 17:21)
