There was no speaker in August – members took themselves off for a cream tea at either The Grange with a chance to browse through the Nursery, or at Pengersick Farm and a wander through Martin’s magnificent garden.

Report on the trip to The Garden House, Buckland Monochorum by Jay & Geoff Helmore:  ‘Perhaps it was foolhardy to visit the Garden House in August.  Even Tommy’s amazing ability to find a way round traffic jams was taxed to the limit. What is more, the super weather we had been having threatened to break.  However, we persevered and after a welcome coffee stop at Kingsley Village (definitely a place to visit for all things Cornish including a wonderful selection of local food), we rejoined the coach and optimistically set off eastwards.  Goss Moor area was solid so Tommy sidestepped that and all was well until we approached the Tamar Bridge – well you can’t really sidestep that can you?  Of course we did reach the beautiful Garden House and gardens some four hours after leaving Praa Sands.  Was it worth it?  Yes, of course it was.  The wise ones among us enjoyed an excellent lunch and then we explored the garden.  We loved the wild flower area particularly. We all returned home happy after another circular route specially devised by Tommy and, of course, a coach boot full of prime flowers and shrubs for our gardens.’

Sheila Chandler, from the Old Withy Nursery at Gweek, came to speak to 42 members and guests at the September meeting.  Sheila is an extremely knowledgeable speaker, who illustrated her talk on ‘Plants for Late Summer Colour’ with her personal slides.  She also brought a bucket of cut flowers to show what is currently available in the garden – or in her case, her nursery - and examples of plants which illustrated her talk and were available for purchase.

Next month on Monday 2 October we shall welcome Peter Clough who will talk on ‘The Gardens of Europe’.

There will be a raffle and refreshments available as usual, together with plants for sale.  Meetings are held in the Praa Sands Community Centre starting at 2.00pm and visitors and new members are always welcome.
