Balwest Methodist Chapel

Balwest is the only Methodist Chapel in the Parish of Germoe and has been described as 'an extremely fine example of its kind'.  It dates from 1829, succeeding the earlier thatched meeting house erected in 1798, the site of which is currently being explored by Balwest Heritage Society, which meets in the present schoolroom on the last Friday in the month.  This schoolroom has recently been renovated, with the addition of a modern kitchen and toilet facilities for the disabled.  It is now available for hire by members of the community for various functions.

To book contact Margaret Nicholls 01736 762474.

At present members are busy fundraising in order to restore the Chapel to a similar standard to the schoolroom.

The Chapel and schoolroom are situated on the slopes of Tregonning Hill, where china clay was first discovered in Cornwall.  The surrounding area shows much evidence of tin mining and no doubt earlier congregations would have comprised a large proportion of miners.

This is no longer the case but a Service of Worship is held each Sunday at 11am and a Sunday School is held at 10.30am on the second Sunday in the month.

There is a car park close by and visitors and locals alike are always welcome.
